Almost Behind Us.

A busy week of interviews is almost behind us!  This has been somewhat new territory, and it’s been both exciting and exhausting.  The week began Monday with a meeting at a radio station in St. Mary’s, GA, a quaint little coastal town we hope to have more time to explore in the future.  From there, we headed to Valdosta, GA for a radio interview taped on Tuesday.  Following that interview, we headed to the Atlanta area where we spent the night at the Family Net studio in preparation for a live TV appearance on Wednesday morning.  Nathan performed one song and was interviewed for the show EveryDay With Marcus and Lisa.  They took a brief commercial break and the camera crew and hosts came running out to the motor home with Nathan where they asked the children and me a couple of questions.  I have no idea what they asked or what I replied!  Since it aired live, I haven’t seen it, though we hope to get a tape sometime.

We parked at the studio for WATC for a few hours, and Nathan did another live appearance that evening.  Yesterday, he taped two more interviews, and tonight we are headed to a state park.  Nathan is providing music for a men’s retreat, then we’ll head to Milledville, GA to play on Sunday morning before heading back to the Atlanta area for a Sunday evening concert.  Whew!  We have a couple of weeks worth of concerts scheduled in the Atlanta area, and we’re looking forward to some good fellowship while we are there.

Children at the Table

My children are a huge help to me.  This picture was taken today by a gentleman named George at Grace Presbyterian in Arcadia, FL.  In fact, there were three different men named George here today!  At this point Jonathan pretty much runs my CD table, counts CDs, takes care of sales, and suggests changes, too.  I just could not get it all done without them.

Meetings at the Motorhome

Today Paul stopped by. Not the apostle, as he said, but a gentleman who had a couple songs for me. As soon as he saw the guitar, he grabbed it up and sang away! Things like this just don’t happen everyday.

What do you like better?

I am often asked whether I like small or large concerts better.  Truth is, I like both, but for different reasons.  Two days ago I played at a very small church in Pinellas Park, FL for about 35 folks.  Some would say this is uncomfortably small.  I call it intimate, and even exposing.  It’s hard to hide behind a big sound system, smoke and mirrors when you can see the whites in peoples eyes.  It’s just a scenario that is less forgiving.

A favorite Bruce Cockburn tune of mine has this line “headed to the northland, where the weather keeps you real.”  There’s something about small concerts and house concerts that keeps you very real, and in touch with real people.

Large concerts are certainly fun, but you just can’t shake everyone’s hand, share cookies and coffee, hear about recent struggles, joys, and hopes, etc…  The more the merrier, and the fewer the less less forgetful – both for the performer and the people.
